about us
FMoD helps Detroiters live a more sustainable, creative, and connected life. Let’s paint a picture together - a vibrant world where beauty and community dance hand in hand, where everyone’s needs are met through the power of sharing. In this world, stores are replaced with community hubs where kindness and smiles are the only currency. At the Free Market of Detroit, we’re reimagining what exchange looks like by bringing this vision to life.
We’re not just talking about any old swap meet. We create colorful swap spaces that are vibrant, fun and informative. Here, you don’t just exchange stuff - you trade stories, ideas, skills and plenty of laughs too! It’s a place where that old lamp you’ve outgrown might light up someone else’s life, where you might find the perfect vintage dress with a tale all its own, and where you can learn to mend a treasured item, giving it a new lease on life.
our mission
The Free Market of Detroit changes how our community defines value through the priceless exchange of stories, wisdom and goods.
In a world where consumerism often clashes with sustainability, finding a way to live authentically while minimizing waste can be a challenge. Many people want to declutter responsibly, find unique and meaningful items, and connect with others who share their values, but they’re often limited by cost or the availability of ethical options. Whether you’re a conscious consumer, a creative soul, or someone looking to build a more sustainable lifestyle, we are a space that supports your goals without compromise.
our principles
Our principles represent our beliefs about and commitments to fostering a vibrant, sustainable, and inclusive community. They guide the choices we make and the interactions we have as we work together to redefine value in Detroit.
sustainability is fun
We believe that sustainable practices don’t have to be difficult or dull. By making sustainability an enjoyable and straightforward part of life, we encourage everyone to participate in caring for our planet and each other.
free holds value
Just because something is offered freely doesn’t mean it lacks worth. We emphasize that the true value of items lies in their ability to bring joy, utility, and connection, not in their price tag.
community comes first
Our actions are guided by a commitment to our community. We ensure that everything we do is rooted in inclusivity, making sure that every participant feels welcome and valued.
reciprocity is essential
Reciprocity is at the core of everything we do. We believe in the importance of giving as well as receiving, recognizing that both actions are essential to building a resilient and interconnected community.
honor our wisdom
We draw strength and guidance from the knowledge passed down through generations. By valuing and applying this wisdom, we connect our past to our present and future.
creativity transforms
Creativity is at the heart of how we express ourselves and solve problems. It’s a practice where we inspire each other to think differently, to see possibilities in what others might overlook, and to turn the ordinary into the extraordinary.
our founder
Halima Afi Cassells is an award-winning interdisciplinary artist, facilitator, and proud mom who brings creativity and connection to everything she touches. Based in Waawiiyaataanong (Detroit, MI), Halima’s journey from traditional painting to community-centered artistry was sparked by her passion for urban gardening and her deep love for the earth.
As the founder and co-director of the Free Market of Detroit, Halima reimagines what it means to exchange value in a world that often overlooks the power of sharing and sustainability. Through FMoD, she explores big ideas like freedom, work, and disposability, all while creating spaces where people come together to swap not just goods, but stories, smiles, and a whole lot of creativity. Halima’s mission is simple yet profound: to cultivate a community where everyone and everything can thrive, and where creativity knows no bounds.
